I have found it much more effective to make connections between pages that were related than to try and achieve some arbitrary no of internal links. If it is going to help the reader then chances are it was worth doing.
For a completely new product I would definitely goes for the attraction rather than the ranking. It is easier to generate traffic through shorter content, community building and small paid trials than through SEO.
You may even start without having a website, but if you are serious about it then create one for urself. Choose a single topic writes some thing useful on it and does not complicate things in the beginning.
