I am 70% sure that its just the data refresh/index update. Couple of my sites for which i built links in the past couple of weeks entered top 10.

I would recommend going in for some cheap(yet reliable) 1 GB VPS for each software you are using. I have tens of VPS rather than just dumping everything in a single machine. I run just one or two tools per VPS.

As stated by you, they are building links for those web 2.0. Just apply the same in any other niche, it will work. It all depends upon competition and strategy.
