It's impossible , when you buy then they're activated by the shop. There is no way to crack them. Trust me. I would just buy one , or find someone who will buy you on in exchange for some work:)

You don't have to use oDesk , can you use Elancer , freelancer , and the many others that don't have desktop Apps.

Depends how many clients you get , if you get 10 or so. It could a nice $1000-$2000 a Month. I wouldn't recommend it for long , just so you can get some capital. But I would recommend doing freelancing anyway , just so you can get some money in the Bank and some confident while your at it...
