I have heard about that rumor, too. But when I switched to business account it didn't affect my engagement at least not that I could tell. Shadowbanning seems to be a big thing now too that can reduce engagement.

Yes, play with the settings. A lot of people follow/unfollow a lot of users everyday. For me, the follow/unfollow method definitely brings me more followers than just liking people's posts.
