Like every good marketing tactic, it has to be test. Try to test different scripts and track your results. Tweak the ones that have promise, get rid of the ones that don't work. And if you dread making phone calls (like I did), hire a college student to do it for you and don't forget to test...

One of my local competitors uses SMS marketing for Pizza restaurants with great success. I can't get him to tell me how yet, but I do know he charges 10% of the increased sales. He's trying to do the same for some fast food places as well and as far as I know, he's making an easy $5 or 6K a month.

I use Google Voice. The only drawback is that you must have another phone number attached to it and they have to be different for each Google Voice phone number you have. Other than that, it works great for local numbers.

I'd be interested and curious how this turns out for you. When are you going to test it and post your results?
