When you say your friend bought himself 3 reviews, do you mean paid someone for those reviews, or just bought his listings 3 times and left his own reviews from the same device and PP account?

No update may mean they got suspended for shilling which is what Etsy calls when you or a family member/friend buys your listing and leaves a positive biased review to boost numbers. They are very good at busting shops over this and OP never said they were careful when doing it.
