Go slow in the beginning and do not just start spamming as you could cause more negatives than positives to it. Manual or automated would be fine provided you just send as many links each day. Contextuals would be the best.

I dont think using url variations would cause problems to your accounts, nor can I imagine a penalty because of pinterest links. As for traffic, the more images you share, the better it would get.

You can google it, there are some sites that would let you submit your domains to statistics sites.

Compare the domains backlinks with those ranking at the top for your keyword and pick what seems to be better than them.

I am curious to see what others have to report about high pr links, it does seem like some sites simply stop moving with quality links.
