The SKU is not related to the GTIN exemption its a string used for your own reference if you get an error that is invalid or duplicate you can create a ton of random strings from random.org as suggested in the OP

Google reverse image search does the trick usually like pinko said and you might also want to try some of those image recognition plugins for chrome and firefox just in case.
