I have a couple sites ranked organically in the top 20 for the niches that promote Amazon books (among other Amazon things), and I have gotten click throughs and purchases. Not a lot though, I think since I started them I've made maybe $5. Could be because of the poor niche, could be the not...

It depends on your area. In my area RoR and C# .NET is in significantly higher demand than Python/Django and PHP. If you peruse jobdango, monster, linkedin, and craigslist for jobs in your area it might be a better indicator to you of what is best.
