There are several downsides/limitations to this of course but I can definitely see this being useful in a few situations.
It's possible, and probable. Don't quote me on this but I remember reading about how record company giant EMI was screwed over on YouTube as they were caught artificially boosting views (and they ended up losing half their videos on YouTube!).
This method could definitely work if you choose a different product and do a better job at selling it. The key to success with this method is experimentation and split testing.
