I wouldnt kill competitor keywords completely. Better put them in separate campaign with small budget and a landing page like “X alternative” or direct comparison. If people come expecting another brand, normal homepage usually wont work.

I wouldnt choose niche only by “best ROI”. On Google I like local services and some SaaS offers, because intent is already strong and you dont need to educate user too much. But honestly GEO + offer can change everything.
