Why even bother? These days you can get a .com for $10, even .99 if you get it on sale. If you can't afford that, you might as well not even start a site because if you want any lasting result you will need at least some type of budget to work with.

In my experience, 1 link from a high authority site works better than 1,000 spammy links. I've had the best luck building high authority links first. After you have some high authority links which will help increase your DA, then you can build some less powerful (but not spammy) links. Good luck
