Here is why I think that this was a very smart move by Facebook. The main use-case for the Facebook mobile app is to upload pictures and share them with your friends. Instagram was just better at this, and with it's 30 million users it depicted a serious threat to Facebook's mobile dominance...

Well it highly depends on if they are targeted to a specific niche or just random people. If they are targeted look out for some offers/products (clickbank, amazon, etc.) related to your niche. If not, you could do as said above and sell ads. Just try to not come over as too spammy.

Thanks. Yeah I was just about to mention that ;) Anyways so at least sending the user directly to the landing tab via ads can still be done. Since the width for the apps is larger now, maybe that makes up for the missing default tab at least a little bit.
