I think the choice mostly depends on the website structure and goals. Subfolders are usually simpler for content management, while subdomains can make sense for separate sections.
Google is much better at ignoring low-quality backlinks now, but I still keep an eye on my backlink profile regularly. Better to monitor than assume everything will be ignored.
