Start over and you will be fine. Dont worry about google updates, its all but normal.

Differences of opinion on what to do next when such an update takes place, but the good thing is, its all healthy. Updates have always been coming and things settling with people moving on with life.

I have lost some spots but doesnt look anything too serious.

I agree with your logic, its not always a penalty but also recovery for others that causes your rankings to drop.
