Who said anything about penalties? My primary site which has no black hat techniques at all got hit on SERP's worst of all, again I received no message regarding any sort of penalty.

The best thing you can do is increase your social signals now so more than ever, especially if you have analytics for the domain. Let them track social referrers without your site rising (or more likely dramatically dropping) in their SERP's.
