Firstly OP this is brilliant, you sort of mentioned it before but do you have a general rule (ratio or percentage) for time management when dealing with clients and actually doing the seo for them? I've sometimes found myself spending nearly as much time meeting and discussing things with them...
Something very similar happened to me and when I started looking it was the old basic of not keeping up with competition, even though the sites are great.
So decided to try building pbn for them and it's starting to pay off, took some work to do on a budget but worth it.
I started off with scrapebox and had similar problems, turns out it was because I bought a cracked copy!
In the mean time I started looking around for options as id already bought moz, majestic and some good proxies which really needed to be used.

Yeah I realised that just after my comment, but got lost in the hypothetical situation of if you presented google it, ie;
If you took a local bakery with a solid customer base that has excellent customer service and specific detailed knowledge for each of their 50 products.
And the local...
As both sites have the same page/keyword ratio and assuming the other K/W on the big site have the same relative value (so the ratio stays the same) then would it come down to all the other stuff like content differences, diversity, relevancy and context!
