You mean the PR is fake? Maybe they faked it.. but I know that Google hasn't updated their public PR since December 2013 :D Yes it is in the same niche and the anchors used are for the same niche as well.

I'm planning on buying an expiring domain and I'm wondering how hard it would be to rank. The root domain is 7 years old, has PageRank 6, about 500 backlinks from 11 domains and a DA of 17. The backlinks are in good standing (no spam whatsoever)... other than that, can I check somehow if it has...

This works if you're going for a churn&burn method... it's just risky that's all. Example: when you hit a big number of likes, say over 100k and you didn't get banned, you post something (aff or CPA or something else), monetize it and hope it will last long enough so that you can make some $$...
