Stay away from free web hosts. Pick a fast host that isn't advertised as "seo hosting". Register the domain for as long as you can. 10 years works.

My tip: don't buy a website unless you are sure you can resell it for profit. A lot of sellers will make you think the website is extremely profitable, when it isn't. There is usually a reason why they're selling the website ;)

Earn niche-relevant backlinks with good quality content. Established websites like purplemath and physicsclassroom are not on .edu domains, but they can outrank them.

For 3, make sure the domain makes sense. Your domain may look spammy towards human visitors if it is something like "programmergood" or "carsexpensive".
