Yea, everything is niche and competition specific but imho you can easily kill your project giving it thousands of links in short time. Some sites will take just few or tens or hundred quality links to rank on first page so you don't need to spam the hell out of them risking to be banned faster...

I'm totally agree with tc101. Actually in today's scenario nobody can tell the exact truth of SEO, Google is working with very crazy mind, It can bring your site on No.1 today and throw it to out of Google ranking, It's all up to Google, SEO gurus can just predict. Nothing else.
