i agree that you should know some basic html and css first before delving into javascript... especially since you said you want to use javascript to customize your web design

it's too verbose... i like scala or clojure better (both based on java)

learn ruby, python, scala (based on java) or clojure. they're more modern languages. though i think java would still be in demand in the coming years. as for benefits? being able to create applications to my own liking is benefit in itself..

yup, get a webhosting with cpanel... and setting up database (mysql) is very easy. there are lots of php+mysql tutorials on the web...

if you have the skills to manage a vps, then go for it. just take the cheapest package first and upgrade when you need more resources. btw, those vps packages... for that price you could get a lot more bandwidth. (usually 1000GB monthly bandwidth)

there are lots of options. I've used sendgrid and would recommend it. there's also amazon ses, mailchimp, etc.
