Overlooking the technical side of things. If your pages don't get crawled, they will not be indexed. Or if your website has too many pages (think 50k +), then your crawl budget will be impacted.

You kind of have to update content to keep it relevant. I actually have it as an internal SOP to update our main pages every 6 months (at least), but only where it makes sense. Not just for the sake of it.
