Yes there are plugins. They work OK in general and some you can schedule to email your SQL database to you. Search for wp-db-backup on Wordpress I'm a big fan of WP Twin too as it can backup or move the whole site including plugins, directories etc. Get to know PHPMyAdmin as it is a great tool.

I think there is still some money in the autoblogs if you target the niche correctly. You can self-host the autoblog too which doesn't get it banned so quickly. It's a pain to work hard and get it removed by Wordpress etc.
