Yes Adsense is always the best place to start. Experiment with different layouts colours etc.

They could be junk links from spam directories or xrumer profiles or blog comments. On page seo is a big factor and should always be your starting point. I would seo spyglass to analyse those links... I am guessing that they are probab;y junk
