How can you tell whether they have a paid link? Shouldn't they aim to hide it? ;-)

You mean reciprocal linking? I thought this is completely ineffective. or exchanging links in the more general sense?

I agree. Somewhere quantity trumps quality in Google's eyes. But 100 relevant links are still better than 100 random links.

I am aware of this - that's why I said I'm looking for methods that are not very time consuming ;-)
