Years back, I comment on my site with different names, these are well optimized comments, and they help the pages to rank better. But comment is now treated as spam, and I doubt humans rely comment on blogs to contribute to the discussion.

Link building is not a Sprint but a marathon race. Being aggressive with it doesn't make Google start ranking you highly. Ranking is slow and steady, especially at this time.

SEO is just complex. Sometimes, what seems to be a myth might just be what's working for some others.

Both are important in my opinion, you just need to build a lot of quality backlinks.
