for me the back link history is more important than the age factor. Even if the domain is not old but has some relevant backlinks it could be useful. But the old domains with irrelevant links is a burden in most of the cases.
SEO do not go away but it changes its name and form depending on where people are searching. The role remains the same to have your stuff found, by what ever means possible.
The major shortcut would have to be the credibility of the site from which u are taking the page. The website has already been around for some tym and you were using its credibility so it will proceed a lot faster than a new website would.
