It does work but may not work for all the website in same way. I have seen many times what rank one website, the same work does not rank other website. Even if the niche are same, keyword are same it gives different results

They get saturated because of a reason. and that reason is potential in that niche. The more saturated mean more ways to make money in that. but if you are not experienced and dont have enough money to compete with those guy, its better to start with some easy niche
