It happens to me too. I only avoid something if it has a bad rating across the board on all three of imdb/rottentomatoes/metacritic and even then it might not be bad.
Horror film fans probably notice that even decent horror movies are rated lower than their counterparts in other genres.
I think like some others said, check out what isn't completely awful on imdb/metacritic/RottenTomatoes and look into whatever's summary sounds interesting.
