I'm not sure of the answer to that sequence of events. Sorry. But from my experience with Twitter, it seems quite possible that they could ask you for the verification straight away. But again, I'm not sure. x

That sounds like a plan. Just make sure that you have access to the new number. I didn't so I lost quite a few accounts.

Are you using the same device and multiple sim cards or are you using one sim card per device? Twitter tracks the device too.

The problem with SMS verification systems is that Twitter can ask you to re-verify at a later date. If you don't have access to that number, you will lose the Twitter account.

How would you deal with the fact that Twitter asks for re-verifications of telephone numbers and then wants to send a code to those numbers. If you've used a text verification service you don't have access to those numbers anymore.

I believe the problem with Text verification services is that Twitter can ask you to re-verify that number and then send you a code to that number. You won't have access to the number for the code. Any suggestions in an event like this?
