phpBB, SMF, vBulletin, etc do have more bells and whistles than vanilla forum. But if simple forum is what you're looking, vanilla forum IMHO does a great job. More does not necessarily means better. It depends on what you're trying to achieve.

I tend to do it manually using search engine than using tool such as Instant Article Wizard for instance. It's a bit laborious but somehow I always get what I'm looking for doing it this way. For search engine I tend to use Bing more than Google. For some reasons I can find much better quality...

If you're using WordPress, there are a couple of plugins to do the job. The one I personally use is called Eclipse Link Cloaker but it's not free. If you're looking for free plugin you might want to try Pretty Link plugin. It also has a paid version. Hope this helps.

This might not always be the case. I've seen sites with no content in it at all sit on top spot of Big G in some very competitive keywords. They sit there for more than 2 weeks. Not bad at all.
