Duplicate PENALTY for using quotes in articles?!

If i was doing a expert roundup of a topic on the best forums in the world and then took quotes from top ranking forums and used them in the article would this be classified as duplicate content?

Bare in mind, the articles will be mostly unique content but if it is pulling quotes (and linking to them) and pasting them into the article then will the article receive a duplicate content penalty or not?

I personally could not see why google would penalise such content if the quotes are contextual, from multiple sources and do not make up the majority of the words in the article.

However, i have not tested this yet so....

Opinions please?

Do you know how they distinguish between quotes and just copied content? I am assuming it is by the external link pointing to the source of the quote?

Thus, if there was no external link referencing original author then it would surely be categorised as duplicate content?

If a small portion of text is taken from some other site, I really doubt you would get slapped for that. Just put it into quotes, add source and you are fine. No need to overthink it.

But thats kinda my point, do you have any reference to what they find as acceptable amount of quotes to unique text. Of course you won't know specifics, but surely there has to be a rough threshold like 25percent quote vs 75percent unique?

There is simple and plain no duplicate content penalty.

Why would you not rank above the original article though, i've seen plenty of times higher domain authority sites pinching smaller sites articles and ranking higher?

I am assuming what you are getting at is that a lower domain authority site will not outrank the original site with higher domain authority for same article?

you make it seem like you want to know if there will be a penalty or not, while in fact you are trying to figure out how google deal with qoutes. people here can't say for sure because i don't think they use that on their money sites. but here is what i can tell you from my own experience. duplicate content works, hell even pages with no text at all, just titles/tags can rank if you target the right keywords

Look at a news site, now look at a news aggregator site. SAME content. No penalty.
Look at Glassdoor, indeed, the ladders: same jobs(read: content), no penalty, hell, Google LOVES them!
Google the phrase "oven roasted orange chicken", check out the recipe sites. Basically the same, some completely the same. No penalty.
I run an auto-blog news aggregator, collecting news from 12-15 different sites, no spinning, no rewriting, just they post an article, and it automatically posts to my page, pictures, videos, and all. HELL, I syndicate out THAT content to other places, but that isn't relevant here.
My site now ranks higher than most of my sources for their own articles in the SERPs. Google doesn't seem to mind.
I know, but you're all like "but the duplicate content penalty"! Between sites, it isn't a "penalty" it is Google struggling to identify the most relevant information. So many people starting out find great content, they copy/paste and figure they will be ranking right up there. NOPE, Google has what they consider the most relevant for THAT topic. BUT, you can build up your sites authority and become viewed as the most relevant by building quality backlinks.

Your first two points (penalty and dealing with quotes) are interlinked so i am trying to find out both.

And THAT is part of where the "duplicate content penalty" comes from. People take an article ranking high, then expect because that article ranks #1, they should get #1-#2 rank for the same article. Not realizing that much more than just the content goes into it.

1) I reference the original source, even link back(no-follow).
2) am I monetizing their content? I don't place any ads IN content, or anywhere within the area marked as my aggregated content section. Now granted, I don't do that out of fear or anything, I just couldn't find any auto ad placement that worked well with auto-blog content, so I built my site template another way.

Google should be pretty smart about it. You probably won't outrank the original sources for any phrases the quotes are relevant to, but there won't be any type of duplicate content manual penalty. The Panda algo should be able to make sense of what is duplicate, and then rank your page based on the unique content and optimization you've done.
