Skype would lead to too much moderation as someone pointed out but slack or discord for the site sounds good.

Skype feels completely off to handle large amount of users.

Slack would be a better call for such things and fitting nowadays trend as well.

That being said, some automation are possible which could possibly an annoyance and hard to moderate. I haven't dug much into what abuses could be done though

I logged on 3 days ago first time in just over a month, there's 84k unread message posts in there...

It's better to develop someone an app with chat rooms like here, in forum, it's manageable, 2-3 administrators can handle it. Practical and can bring some money.
