If you are an seo expert with millions to throw at paid adverts / traffic, then go for a super hard keyword such as Viagra, if on the otherhand this isn't you then the logical thing is go after something you can rank for easily.

Yes... But not too less like 200/300/500. If you have 50/100 Keywords to Target and the search volume is 200/300/500 each that's fine.

OP, a low search volume keyword may not always be of low competition. Examples are pure e-commerce keywords. If you are trying to rank an affiliate site for e-commerce keywords, even if they're of low volume, they'll be hard to rank for. So, focus on competition and the type of keywords when you pick your keywords.

Also, long tail keywords are the easiest to start with when you're just getting started with a new site. Once the site has gained some age and authority, you will be able to rank for keywords with more search volume.

You can use tools like kw finder, keysearch etc to find such keywords easily.

Hello OP,

Download the extension called "keywords everywhere" in your browser. Then you can see the search volume, competency of the keyword and CPC value of those KW while you enter into the Google search bar. The results will be shown under the search bar.

The problem with tools that rely on Googles' keyword planner (including the KW planner itself) is that this is a paid traffic tool (Adwords). This doesn't give you any intelligence at all about organic traffic.

Most of the long tail keywords that you find might not have huge volume, the competition is much lower. Less competition means you will most likely rank well on Google and other search engines more easily.
