Even i have some of it figured out, how hard it is for someone with unlimited money and a job to actually monitor rankings to figure this shit out?
An airplane doesn't think. Idiots here are claiming Google has developed an A.I capable of thinking like human brain, i gave the bacteria analogy to show how ridiculous that idea is. You don't see my logic because you don't have a clue about either of the fields (biology or computing).
Bacteria are also more complex than airplanes...

My legit site got hit, my PBN site is ranking solid. I am here to see if someone figured out what this update targeted so i can change and get my legit site back.
It seems like they just randomly targeted small or new sites to create hysteria and from reading this thread, it's working.
Look, i haven't figured Google's algorithm out but i am manipulating it daily so i will tell you this, don't give them too much credit. Google is just good at creating fancy names, Rank Brain my ass, if it had the slightest level of human intelligence my shitty PBN and sites won't be ranking. So i know for a fact that's just bullshit.

I am going to do this as well. ill drop results in here too. I have had great success doing this for sites that have had manual penalties for unnatural link building. I double redirected and built a clean link profile for the new domain and it works - and worked well.
The issue I have doing a redirect to skirt this problem is that this is basically not apples to apples from my perspective. in my prior experience with 301ing sites that had manual penalties - is that I knew what caused them.
I had one completely white hat site with almost no backlinks and extensive hand written content with all the bells as whistles that got hit. I had another that, well, was quite dirty and for me it was always a thought that this one will tank so burn away (no surprise there) BUT it went on for a long time before getting the manual.
In the fred case, I don't have a clue what caused the issues. If this was some type of rolling penalty, I have to think that there is a good chance that when it roles around again, the site will suffer the same fate.
But hey - who knows?
I am starting with the dirty one first. That one will be more entertaining to work through.
I will post results here.

I'm not sure where your hostility is coming from. Nobody is claiming RankBrain has human-like intelligence.
It's only a stage-1 A.I., which is the lowest level:

We are looking at 45 pages of people being hit while the number of complaints on the official webmaster forums and typical whitehat forums are low to zero. So, no matter what this algorithm does, how "intelligent" it is, it seems to target the right sites, sites built around ads, sites made to make money without too much value for visitors. We call each other names, rant about Google and AI, but noone has a clue how to get out of this filter...so far. Good job, Google!

About "AI Developing", it's probably discussion for deeper computing minds if its possible or not, however to create flawless AI algorhitm that will (for example) read text and ban spun content (i mean content that does not make sense and NOT content that repeats on other sites but with synonyms, thats actually easy to spot) is unlikely to do and would work only in english (at first) if even. It would also ban all sites with uncorrect grammar, all english sites driven by nonenglish speakers, all sites with content written in old fashioned way, would have troubles with any content that doesnt make sense at first, but does at second thought, and many more to list. If i were to write about white people, and describe them as black white people, would have white rappers on mind that rap like black people from USA, but the AI if tried, would ban the site for nonsense such as "white black people"
thats why google is probably focusing on recruiting more and more manual reviewers each year and tell them to search hidden spun content with inspect
if they would create such AI i'd just switch to my native language and fill the internet with spun

Depends how you reacted to the algo change, I think. I changed my internal site structur and saw a sharp increase in crawler activity, coupled with a decrease in crawling time per site.

How do you monitor that ? when spiders coming and going back, how many secs they stay etc ?

Looks perfectly normal, I also saw that sharp increase end of Feb, before my site got fucked by FRED. As it recovered I saw a second shatp rise, just not that high mid-march.

I haven't experienced any crazy dances with my sites, but most of them are in local if that makes a difference.

As I said, it seems to be a multi factor quality update, there seems to be some correlation with social signals, some correlation with links and some with content quality and user experience. The sites which increased in rankings seems to have a bunch of social signals, quality content means long and not duplicated.
While at those which decreased, don't reflect that factors that well.
I'd rather say, they are tweaking their old ones, than that an entirely new algo appeared. The most likely explanation seems to be, that Rank Brain is trying to figure out, how the existing factors go to together to represent a legit site. And apparently a lot of innocent webmasters got hit.

I've done absolutely nothing - sometimes it's the best way forward, especially if you want to get any idea on what is happening, what isn't happening, what works, doesn't work, etc.
Anyway, all rankings back and actually improved overall - so ya-boo-sucks to those who claim any of their sillyness of altering anchor ratios, OBL's, etc have made the difference.
It all came back by itself, by doing nothing at all.

I think the answer to this might be simple. Although everyone is flipping out over content created for ads and PBN links being the issue (which in some cases they may), I think both are highly unlikely.
1) Google now ignores/devalues links it feels are low quality (not penalizes). Source
2) If this is the case, what good will disavowing anything do? Google is already ignoring your links that it thinks are shit. So why start to kill 100 links (admission of guilt) when Google may think 90 of them are still great?
3) If your content is written only based off high advertiser competition keywords (for the purpose of generating ad revenue), and you've written unique and high-quality content that users are engaging with, what makes you think that's a problem? You know if Google penalized sites that utilized AdSense (their own damn product) they'd be choking their biggest money maker off at the neck, right? How absurd. If the search query still exists, then someone must be ranking for it. You can't penalize everyone who targets specific keywords. Why would Google drop your site and raise 5 others for a query that makes money? What did they do right that you didn't? Makes no sense. If I were you guys, I would NOT go back and underoptimize my content and strip all ads. That's just nonsense.
MY BIG THEORY
Given this post here, and from a small handful of websites that I've seen, I suspect this is an issue of the RATIO OF QUALITY VALUE-ADDING PAGES TO TRASH PAGES, not optimized/monetized content. For example, if you have 1 blog posts and 20+ tags, then that single blog post can be found on 20+ useless pages. Therefore, your ratio of quality pages to shit pages is fucking shit. However, if you have 20 blog posts and 0 tags, Google will love you long time because all of your pages add value and doesn't rape their crawlers for resources when they have 1 billion+ websites to crawl. Google may actually consider excessive tag pages as "doorway pages" according to the quality guidelines (which were the target of the Fred update).
Something to think about before hacking your entire site apart... for us WordPress folk, removing tags/categories from your sitemap, noindex the pages and resubmitting sitemaps is a very quick and low-risk attempt at traffic recovery. Worth a try before ruining hard earned backlinks for life.
