Do you use Atomic mail verifier to clean huge mailing list?

I use the Atomic Email Verifier. My bounce rate is less than 3% with the software. I use Amazon SES to send and I have not had issues.

Do you know how it verifies the emails? Does it just check for valid format and valid domain?
