A site without links has no links to be devalued - therefore it cant lose rankings.

It can if it's penalized for onsite content.

You will learn to differentiate them eventually. For now, you can focus on removing backlinks from low-value directories, irrelevant blog comments and link framing sites. If you have a PBN, then just change the anchors instead of disavowing.

What I did:

1. Anchor text dilution
2. Disavowed bad links
3. Reduced OBL count on pages.

Yeah, there were affiliate links. But I doubt that helped because they were already low in count.

just my two cents:

I am using expired domains with high value backlinks (also BBC etc. you name it). Many websites. On every homepage I had around 500 words of content. Simple money sites, not much interlinking, not much outbound linking. No ads at all, just some affiliate links. None of these sites dropped instead they rise (maybe because competition got hit).

ttmschine his statement/opinion is really interesting and I completely agree with many things on how googles algorithm works (and how it doesnt work), but this update doesn't really seem to have any pattern. I also have friends which never bought or build a single PBN link, had a fresh domain and now two years after they registered and used them the domain suddenly get hit. They have no idea why and whats going on and so do I.

i can confirm that my site also went up in ranking. same story as above. no interlinking, no adds, no affiliate links. Just a 2 business sites. Both went up. over the last 3 month, took action to clean up my tier links, ensuring to come up with comparable exact match anchor keyword percentage based on my competition and ensuring all tier 1 have good content.

Mix of naked anchors, generic and branded. I agree with @fb3003 regarding the percentages.

Anchors: Mixed of keywords, LSI, branded, generic, naked
Age: 1 and half years
OBL: Nofollwed
Ads: Yes but not much one in side bar and the other one bellow content
Drop seen: After 9th march, still facing the same issue.
How long: For around 1 year.

You're G., you're rolling our a big update (judging by the volatility, one of the biggest in quite a long time) you're more interested in how it affects older, bigger sites, often with established authority, a solid links base, well recognised etc. not new sites that can be abandoned in next few months, are affected by factors that make fresh sites harder to rank, have unstable link profile, can change their structure in just few days etc.

That is something they would test before they release the update, not after or during. You are guessing.

Yeah in my opinion i don't think its the anchors.. I was ranking #1 and many keywords were starting to dominate.. Im sure the anchors they wouldnt switch that much that it will effect this..
