My site picked up dramatically after the Feb. 8th Phantom update (I think that's the name). It increased in traffic by about 400%, then got hit hard on the March 8th Fred update. Since then, it's been super steady at about 1,400 visitors/day (down from 4,200 visitors/day). Site info:

  • 0 PBN Links
  • 0 Web 2.0 Links
  • 2 Ads Per Page
  • 0 Affiliate Links
  • 120 Articles
  • Article length = 700-1,200
  • SEO Optimized (but not overoptimized I'm pretty sure)
  • 100% outreach, topically relevant, DA30+ and DA20+ links on sites with traffic and authority
  • Naturalized anchor text
  • HTTPS
  • 1 second page loading time
  • 7 Moths old
WHAT THE HELL DID I DO WRONG?

Yeah sounds pretty clean that one, what about bounce, time on site, ad CTR etc. Do ppl stick around AND most importantly convert/end their search or do they stay short or go back to search results and keep looking... is your site the real problem solver for the searcher.

The only site i have still ranking high has adsense ads. The other ones (clickbank, cpa...) disappeared from the serps.

The only underlying pattern to the ones that got hit is temporal. Any site I put up between August and January was destroyed for all keywords. The rest are untouched going all the way back to 2015 and up to last month when the last one was put up.

I'm posting as someone may consider it interesting that all of these sites are essentially identical as far as link profiles, content quality, number of pages, post length, etc. the only difference is when they were put up.

My web that got hit and other cases I know were created in the same time frame, towards the end of 2016.

Strange coincidence.

Hi, thanks for the reply.

Avg. time on site is 2.5 minutes, which is pretty good I think. My bounce rate is about 70%. That's a little high, I know. However, every single one of my competitors have bounce rates of at least 80% to 85%, and now they're ranking above me (which they weren't before).
 
this update is so weird ass. most people who got hit here are reporting using paid links. so theres a correlation.

It is niche dependant for sure, don't need the best metrics in the world, just need to be better than the competition. That said my network is around 10mins avg time on site and 20% bounce. My pages aff links also convert at around 30%. So it's a real searcher blackhole, once they come in, google loses them forever lol. It's a good sign they are happy. So it's possible to improve for sure. How do you know what your competitors metrics are? Without log access you really have no idea.

You're right, I can't know for sure.

I use SimilarWeb.com or SEMRush.com. They're probably not completely accurate, but it's the best I can do.

My niche, by nature, has a high bounce rate. People simply get the answers they need and get out.
 
Just to clarify, we have 100's of websites. Only one such website had been hit and it was the only one that we put g ads on about 4 month's ago.
All the other sites have a mix of great links for some to the crapiest rank and bank spam you can think of, they never got hit at all, just the one with g ad's dropped... but now almost completely back... and yes we force submitted it back with changes, but don't even ask how we do this if you don't already know how to force index stuff.
 
Same for me. Looks like my income will drop by 75%. Feck!!!!

Never mind, just adapt and move forward, but FRED, you ain't welcome in my house!

I hadn't done a massive amount of backlinking as they're fairly low competition - mostly blog commenting and a few pbn links (not my own, but from what I consider to be a fairly secure provider). Content is high quality and the sites are pretty much white hat bar the few pbns. Going to leave things a few days and see if rankings come back before I do anything. With Amazon dropping commission rates and now this, 2017 ain't turning out to be such a good year so far!

Please let us know if it works. I've added some PBN a week before the update to boost some keywords but don't see any impact (either positive or negative) yet.

My site was originally built in 2014, but I did a domain change (with proper redirection, notifying the change through Search Console, etc) in October 2016. Don't know if that can mean anything... But I don't think they've penalized every "new" domain on that period.

Haven't seen much of a recovery. Or it is so tiny and unstable that it doesn't deserve to be called that.
