How does google determine what your keywords are?

There's lots of info about building 13% exact match anchors, but how does google know which are main keywords that you are trying to rank for. Is it that google just ranks higher that 13%.

If you have 13 keywords and they make up only 13% of your total backlink profile, why does google rank for these?

Is it better to have just 3 keywords that you rank for which have 4 % each which totals close to 13% etc?

What is the optimum amount of keywords you should rank a page for? 1 keyword, 3 etc?

As per my perception, google crawls your content and counts on accountability, quality, and readability of content. It keeps a count of all the words/phrases that are acknowledgeable and hold an accountable organic search result in SE (or in case other users are targeting). Later as soon as the authority increases, google start relying on the authority and show your content in relevant results for KWs who even you didn't mention in meta just because of the good authority. I have even seen a single content piece targeting 240+ organic keywords. These days the users are targeting 50+ keywords of a same micro niche by writing one-page content (keeping the word count way higher)

A good keyword density is also a key. keeping the keyword bold and managing a good keyword density by genuine quality content works in the case and help you and google both to target the somehow same keyword(s).

Ignore percentages, just don't spam your keyword unnaturally all over the place. The Google crawlers pick up most commonly used terms from your content and rank accordingly if your content and SEO is good. Go check out a site called Ahrefs to see an example of how they pick up keywords on your site. Hope that helps
 
I was trying to work out how the google algo/software works out how it determines the keywords. I figure a better understanding of this would help me rank.
 
if you mean 13% of your anchor txt links thats high IMO, particularly with the latest updates. What I think is safest is to put youre exactr anchor text in the most authoritative of your pages, and in the rest branded, naked and partial matches
 
Let me be very clear .. Whatever keyword or nicke you tarket.. Google or adsense f##ks us..

Adsense always display ads as per users broweser cookies.. And Google ranks your website as per the backlinks providers niche.. If your website niche is finance and you get a backlink from a fashion website, it is of no use ..

True.. Tried and tested methods.
 
Do most users rank a website for 3 keywords or 20? Etc.
 
Google uses a variety of techniques to understand what your keywords are. Onsite content, backlinks with relevant anchortext etc. Google search console, or webmaster tools as it used to be known as, details what keywords Google see's your website being about.
 
its over 200 factors which rank your page for a kw.
so meanwhile its not using the kw as anchor and google ranks you for that ... this used to be in the good times like this :)

You mean 87 of anchor text must not be the targeted keyword? Isn't that just too low? Say if I buy 10 blog posts only one of them should be the main keyword and the rest 9 random or incomplete keywords?

I would go for branded terms and generic terms in 9 out of 10 links, yes, just to be safe

of course it depends on the amount of links you plan to build, if you're making 10 links in total, its not a problem to have 2 or 3 KWs, but if you're building 100, then I wouldnt go over 15 for KWs, and Id pick the 2 or 3 most authoritative ones for to put those Kws in there.

Basically, its my opinion, and it can be challenged for people with more experience and knowledge, that as more spammy or less reliable/trustworthy link you're acquiring or making, more careful you gotta be with your KWs. so if you're building alot of links in web 2.0 Id only use branded and other generic Kws, same goes for blog comments or forum (if you decide to do those two latter, which have to be very handpick)

What I can definitely say its that you dont want to be taking extra risks with anchor text right now, G seems determined to punish those practices

Keywords used in your blog post should be optimised for search engine...Use keywords in different ways in your blog post...Also use LSI keywords in your blog post...Now search engine crawl your website and find and rank your keywords on it's use in key areas like title, h1 h2 tags, meta description, URL etc ...Also keyword density should not be more than 2 % in your blog post...Do not fill keywords in each line and spam the post....The more information you share about your keyword the more it will rank in search engine...!!!
 
Google ranks your site based off of many different factors (inbound links, content, page rank). However, make sure the keywords you want to be found for are well represented on the pages of your site.

I picked a random keyword, Los Angeles plumber and the top website outside of local results and after Yelp was Ritz Plumbing, so I'll use them as an example:

  1. URL or domain name - ritzplumbing.com
  2. Title Tag - Plumber Los Angeles | Plumbing Los Angeles - Ritz Plumbing
  3. Meta Description - Providing plumbing services to Los Angeles since 1931. Call (888) 757-7489 for fast 24hr service across Southern California. Free estimate.
