Strange SERP movements for my Keyword

So guys,

I have a website (currently ranking 1 for the keyword. Great).

Then I have a twitter as well as a medium.com blog targetting the same keyword.

The twitter briefly reached position 1 and then went to a steady 3. It has since moved back down to 4.

The medium receives weekly content updates and has been ranked 8 so far.

Now however, for reasons unknown to me, the Medium seemingly got slapped back down to #26

I invested at least 20 hours in that site writing around 40 articles, each around 1000 words long, relevant to the topic and using my knowledge as a craftsman to write.


Meanwhile a competitor site is ranking position #3 yet he is not posting any content updates and is purchasing cheap fiverr links en masse (100.000 + so far)

What the hell am I doing wrong? This is sad as whatever I do seems to be false for that f*cking Search engine so far

There was a Google update that came out couple of days back, and that could be a reason or it can be a normal google dance.

See what your competitor's page looks like, the landing page after entering the keyword. Is it more relevant? Is it easier to read/understand? Remember, whenever you hit page 1 you're bound to get "human reviewed", meaning Google's team (of real people) will look at the sites with high rankings to see how good to content corresponds with what was being searched. Could be normal Google dance after algorithm update, could be the former. Give it a week or two and see how it goes.

Etienne, thanks for the info. It is a medium.com site so it has a standard medium.com format which should be fine as the site usually ranks very high.

It may be a normal google dance, you can wait for some time to settling down. Also, please check your on-page SEO working properly. Try to build some quality backlinks that's also helpful to your SERP.

There are extreme fluctuations for this keyword every single day. WTF Google.

There are a lot of reports of Google dancing, so you should not worry to much about day to day fluctuations. Google is trying to find the best serp result, by "randomly" placing websites in and out of top 10 and checking their ctr and bounce rate to see how users interact with them.

Your competitor will likely be short-lived.

Google has made an update in its algo so it mighty be possible reason for your fluctuations in SERP.
