I just wrote a blog post about this yesterday and I figured might share it on here as well.
This is something that's been working for me quite great lately, although I'm not sure how many people are familiar with it.
Basically, I managed to get the following ranks using nothing but on-page optimization with Yoast, and the Google Search Console (the 181 BLs are from two Fiverr gigs I tested which didn't do shit):
I did do my keyword research before starting the site (domain was registered at the beginning of December, and I finished the site at the end of the same month).
Here's what I did:
1. 6500 words of high quality content targeting the main 110k MS keyword.
2. 500 words of content for each of the other keywords, still keeping it optimized for the main keyword
3. Yoast optimization
4. Indexing changes using the fetch tool in the Google Search Console.
That's it. You literally see dramatic changes like these happen:
The image above is from the 27.1k MS keyword, which I optimized for on January 3rd, and had it appear on #12 within hours.
