Hello, I am brand new to online money making and one of the first ventures I am trying is the buying of very old domain names for cheap and trying to sell them for a small profit. I have read that a good way to sell domain names is to post them on forum sites along with the usual auction areas. As I have never done this before I was hoping to get some advice on how to best go about this.

The age of domain doesn t mean anything if you dont know what are you doing, you need first to understand what you want to buy, a domain for seo or a domain for domainer. If for seo you need to understand many factor and there are plenty of guide and for domainer you need to have good eyes and good luck but in either case you won't find old good domain for cheap

Buyers who know what they are doing will do checks, make sure you know the history of the name first, like if it was used for spamming or has been banned.
If you don't know what you are doing then probably best to leave it.

buying domain names and then selling them is not going to be a fast turn around on money. Most that sell old domains sit on them for some time before the right buyer comes along.

If you invest lots of money you could buy expired domains for less money... but when you calculate tools investment ~400-500$ + 200$ monthly, does that really pay off... That's why experts who know all about domain metrics, blacklinks, RD, anchor text, spam check, reindexing tricks,etc do that job because it pays off well for them.
Noobs who think they're clever enough for a task like this often get stuck with 'good for nothing' domains and lose their money and their time. If you think you can handle it, go for it. If you can't then learn SEO, boost your money site by buying expired domains from a professional and start growing a marketing network.

There're many big guys in domain industry that you can list your domains for sell such as Flippa, Sedo, Godaddy Auction,...If your domains have attractive enough, many brokers will contact you then you don't need to find each guys to give offer.

How about targeting big companies and buying their domain names on the remaining extensions other than the original one! This would give you a good chance of the original domain's owner contacting you and stretch out a deal. Had happened for many around the world.

If the domains you buy has authority and has links from huge authority sites and you happened to pick up the domain because the start up failed or something, then you can sell it on forums such as here for a pretty nice profit. Make sure that you have permission to create a marketplace thread before you start selling on here, as it will lead you to getting infractions pretty easily.

I would absolutely suggest another route to making money.
Why?
The age of domains is playing out.
It's a limited niche.
It's a lot more intricate now selling domains than it was just 2 years ago.
If you do choose to do it, good luck. I don't see 'big money ' coming from this long term.. So many 'caps' on the potential from the jump.
Hoever, it may be a good 'splash of water' on the feet for learning to buy/sell on the internet... *shrug*

Sometimes I catch dropped domains but on the other hand godaddy auctions can have some powerful domain now and then, services like flipa or namecheap can also give you a good offer. If you have nerves to track and wait for a good one godaddy is a place. Besides that you can also find HQ domains here on BHW, just take a quick search and you'll find lots of domain brokers.
