How do I improve my DA? White or Blackhat. Tips and tricks please

Hi! I'm looking for a few tips, here. I don't mind if it's white or black hat.
Here's the deal: I've had a blog for about 3 years now and my traffic is steadily the same, a shitty 1k uniques per month. It's been like that since day 1. I know I have good content, but it's not populist shit like a lot of other blogs in my niche.
That being said, I can live with low traffic - I'd like to improve to 10k, but hey, for now, it is what it is. The only thing that really has been a concern is the Domain authority I get on MOZ.
I'm at 22. It's been like this for a long time. I NEED to improve it. And I can't get caught with shitty spammy backlinks. I thought about guests posts, which would indeed improve my DA, but it's a lot of hard work.
My #1 competitor in my niche has a DA of 42. He's been trading guest posts for a long time, but MOZ is giving the site almost 14k backlinks!! I don't get it. (Plus his writing is fucking horrible, but whatever.)
All that to say that I need tips and tricks on how to improve my DA without it being suspicious. There are a lot of PRs checking my site out, so I need to drip-feed anything I do.

Stop obsessing over a metric that has NO RELATION TO GOOGLE WHAT SO EVER.

You should worry about rankings -> traffic -> conversions. Not 3rd party metrics.

The better question is, how can I improve my rankings, which is very site by site dependent, and a combo of links, on page content, user metrics, etc, etc.
