Help!!! First SEO Client

What I am having a harder time with is separating what is black / grey / white hat some times from learning so much on this amazing forum. Obviously I want my service to be squeeky clean white hat.

:)

For keyword research I'm not sure it's possible to be blackhat.

For link building, basic whitehat link building is something like this..

Finding good quality directories and manually submitting sites to them. Type viagra into the search box and you will see whether they have been spammed to death or are still ok. If you're using directories for clients I would advise going with paid directories. There are two reasons for this

1) Paid directories generally have better editorial guidelines and so will provide better quality links for your clients.
2) Free directories can take months to add your links and your clients will want a report at the end of the month.

Once you have multiple clients you will be able to negotiate large discounts with directory owners.

For articles, if you write them yourself then it's whitehat. Don't bother submitting to 500 sites..submit to ten or twenty.. ideally though you would want unique content on each article but maybe that's not something you can organise yet.

As for social bookmarking, if you build natural profiles (e.g. include sites that aren't just those of your clients) and do all of this manually then this is whitehat.

As for the onsite optimisation - if you are simply changing headers, titles and writing a bit of text then this is whitehat.

Seomoz have a nice list of whitehat ranking factors with opinions from some top seo people. http://www.seomoz.org/article/search-ranking-factors

Do all of this and you'll stay white. I would avoid anything grey for the timebeing until you get used to doing everything by the book then you will start to recognise the differences between black and white.

Some companies you can't really see results, you just have to follow leads or track some how.. This is what you need to report on. What they are paying you for or what you explained beforehand.. You probably should backtrack a bit on what it is you're offering.. Just top serps and/or returns? If you're not tracking then why pay once their at the top, doesn't seem good for upsell or viable for them even keeping a longer contract.. Not sure what you're service cost is, but keep that in mind.

I would get the feel for things before expanding to that many services unless you think you can handle it.. You might seem more like a salesman than a person trying to help them, just dishing stuff down their throats till they get sick of you.. If you can roll them into a lengthy contract, then congrats.

My best advice is give your best to impress them and get the results they need.Exceed their expectation if possible and i'm sure you can make it.Goodluck and trust yourself.

Thanks for all the kind words :)

I will keep all updated. I am having my first meeting this friday. I will trial a few things with the web designer to get him on board then will roll out to his clients as he needs white hat examples of what I can do.

The clients I do not know much about at this point. This I will find out of the meeting. I will then replicate this with all the web designers I am working with many seem to be professional and busy (but know f^&k all about SEO ;))...

Currently I am just making sure I have sales info, reports, contracts, timescales, very detailed overview of service (making sound as impressive as possible ;))

I would be really interested if anyone could recommend a resource for SEO contracts or if any have been shared here? I think I can dig some web design ones and adapt if not.

Also SEO seems to be trickier to quote for than most things I have looked as, this is because all places seem secretive about their prices or offer a free analysis first or are services aimed at web masters who are already good at SEO e.g. out sourcing...? Is there a good place to research market rates for SEO?

Thanks again for the help. I really appreciate this place.

:)

i also like the digixmas submitter. Faster submitter to directories unless you have a custom one.

YOu have a pretty good list OP. That is pretty much it.. I assume you have automated software for everything you listed i do if not i could give you a list.

I know most people don't do ffa,'s and sites like that but i still use cyberfetch as one of my 12-14 softwares i use on a site for seo. I have not got prounced yet by google for usage of it.

Hey steve,

heres some contract info i found:

Code:

Code:

Also, dont forget about SEO work for their locality

As for the onsite optimisation - if you are simply changing headers, titles and writing a bit of text then this is whitehat.

I'm new here and mostly just been lurking and learning but would really appreciate some examples of BH on-site optimization.

Thanks

Leave this out, it's useless

This is odd so many people here have highly recommended them?

I also thought of some quirky white hat marketing spins for this such as encouraging your clients to get plug ins, widgets, screensavers etc. if you made something very funny it could even go viral...

:)

hows it going steve?

Its been going good but slow.

I have drawn up a generic plan for all the things I will do with the service inc. reports, timescales, pricing, software, contracts. I even purchased some stuff and have been testing the reporting side.

I have 2/3 clients very interested but meetings have been delayed as the web designer I am working with geographically lives far away from me so has been scheduled a few times, but some of his clients are getting grumpy regarding SEO so are putting pressure on him to make this happen (I just need to make sure they are OK with working with someone who isnt super experienced). I will also try to get the jobs to generate more sites and freelance work for him too.

Other stuff has been going on too there is a new Internet start up that wants me to do SEO with them in more of a junior role with someone more experienced, but they are talking poss share options. Also one or two top SEO firms are also interested in me but arent currently recruiting. One seems to want to stay in touch and hopefully get me on board when they next recruit.

What has also caused a bit of a spanner in the works is I have hopefully been offered some freelance work as a manager which I cant turn down but will eat into my time.

I would be interested to know any tips for convincing people when you have limited experience (I could but dont want to lie) also pricing seems to be tricky to pin down. TBH I am much more interested in working with my first few clients than making $$$$ initially.

Some good advice I had was to charge a full rate but reassure them as a less experienced consultant you will be working far harder and double / triple checking work versus being potentially very lazy.

:)

If they don't ask, don't mention it (I've never been asked)

Spin it round in your mind, if you can mate. You're a busy guy. You know more than most people on the planet about SEO (just by reading these forums, if nothing else). You've got all these potential offers of work in the near future. In a way, the meeting will be more about YOU interviewing THEM to see if they're suitable to take on as a client.

Do they have the right mindset towards the web and promoting their business online, do they have a budget allocated, are they the kind of people you would enjoy working with, do they listen properly to the advice you offer.... ??

(EDIT - that might sound like I'm suggesting you should be arrogant, which I'm not. But you should expect mutual respect. They know their job, you know yours)

HTH

Wow, thats awesome, steve. Congrats! How did your get all those people interested? What kind of advertising do you do?

As far as the tips for when you have little experience...are you young? Is that why maybe they think youre not very experienced. Either way, its hard for me to say because im a half way decent bullshitter. And you dont have to lie to them, just bend the truth or omit. Or tell them you just "had a brain fart" and forgot. And its ok to tell them you dont know and youll get back to them on it. Or youll ask your boss and get back to them, etc. Fake it till you make, bud!

Thanks for the help

I have got the work from networking and undercutting the bricks and mortar firms by approx. 60% - 80% turning it into a lower end freelance rate (for first 5-10 clients) rather than a corporate rate e.g. a company that has offices, sexy receptionists etc.

The problem I have is that many of the potential clients either arent educated in SEO and cant see the value right away (many ppl can get freaked out by the prices - I hope to hoover up ppl that have already had high end quotes) or simply cant afford the service right now.

I am being forced to rethink my strategy a little as I had a business plan based on how I believe the top consultants work - very high level corporate reporting (hours of the stuff), competitive analysis, market research, auditing, long term web strategies all tailored to a client that is turning over $1,000,000 plus maybe.

I need to some up with a launch package (keyword research, audit, onsite optimisation, 100 links maybe? for a start up) and a budget option (maybe only 50% of the reporting / hours? for a small business) as I think most of the interest I have atm is start up companies.

I think the key to my success will probably be working with small businesses until I can snare a big client (there may be one in the pipeline).

The way I have managed to get interest is all 100% through networking and getting out there i.e. offline. Also setting up a generous referral system that will incentivise ppl to recommend me. Luckily I am an older chap (compared to most of the ppl on this board) and have had a string of top jobs including client facing roles. I think the key is getting out there and meeting face to face with ppl and finding ppl that are excited about growing their business online, or have a large marketing budget and you can promote the benefits of SEO versus TV, radio, magazine ads etc. (this wont work for everyone but does work). I am older therefore I can BS like the best of them but ideally want to be honest. I will concentrate on what I can do / have done rather than what I havent done.

One of the keys is I spend too much time here and I need to kick myself up the arse and stop getting sidetracked. I will probably JV with a web designer in the hope he can help me focus. He will get web work I will get SEO.

I had a major meeting yesterday which should hopefully lead to meeting approx. 5 clients who are potentially interested but most with smaller budgets than I hoped.

Any tips for creating cheaper options would be appreciated. I am concerned about diluting the quality of the service too much. My whole business model is based around creating a really good service as despite some of the stuff posted here the quality services are the ones that can make you $$$ long term.

:)
