For those of you who have set up movie/tv show sites, do you use offshore hosting? Or is setting a disclaimer good enough if you have hosting in the US?

What are some good offshore hosts?

Thanks!

Host the videos offsite through like Megavideo or something and then throw up a

Disclaimer: does not host any of the episodes ...o link to it as long as there's a disclaimer?

Hmm, what about this?

I'm not sure about the legality of it all but its definitely teetering on the edge of whats legal. I have several sites like that and I know lots of people who have these sites but they don't seem to be having any problems. I don't think there been any major crackdowns or legal notices to the movie site folks yet.

Oh okay, and you didn't pursue any offshore hosting right?

Offshore hosting is a must in attempting to stay anonymous. Means the US court cant just show a subpoena for what's valid in the states, but has to work with that specific country's laws in which is hosting your server. This is costly and timely for lawyers and the RIAA (even though they have a bucketload of cash), but unless youre top 100 visited in the world you shouldn't be worried. Look at alluc.org -- ranked 5400..Been around for a couple of years now. 15 y.o. (or maybe 18 now) German kids making bank

Btw..anyone got a list of those "tv hosting" sites?

Can you recommend some good offshore hosting that will do the job for this?

2x4.ru I read somewhere :)
Thats for hosting. Make sure you buy your domain from somewhere else BUT US. It's easy to subpoena an ICANN registrar in the US vs. somewhere in China --- Xin Net would be your preferable choice in staying anonymous.

If they want to come after you they still can. Offshore hosting will not protect you. Believe me. If they want to come after you they can easily get your information by issuing subpoenas to your advertisers/affilaite accounts. And by law they have to disclose the information. So think twice before doing something like this.

Offshore hosting will only prevent you from having your datacenter shut you down, but it won't prevent MPAA coming after you. Also, having a disclaimer like that doesn't make a difference, you are still contributing to infringement. A.K.A. contributory infringement.

Yeh..The way to get around advertisers/affiliate accounts is to make a foreign company in say Seychelles or Panama. Acting directors are going to be your "representatives" (you're the attorney of power; still hidden), so their names will be the ones the MPAA come after -- IF they get the info given; there's a reason why Cayman is less used since they signed an agreement with the US govt. You issue a bank account with this company either under your friends' name who you're going to pay monthly for being the signing signature or under your own if you got enough balls.

So if you really want to go DARK DARK with this...you better do it right from the start and make the right payments.

You're absolutely right..The disclaimer means jack-all LOL.

Best is if you're not an US citizen...If they do find your real identity and you're not an US resident it becomes A LOT harder to prosecute you since they need to go to that specific country and charge you. That's why if you're in the Philippines you should be good to go and give them the middle finger :)

There was this site named TVLINKS that had only links to other places where TV shows were hosted and the owner was arrested...He was from the UK though.

for the op remember the piratesbay story ... it was just linking of torrent , in a tolerated warez country ...

lesson here guys.. use fake names when you register your domain. :D

And you don't think they can see who paid for it? Only way to avoid getting done via domain buying is to use wire transfer by some joe down the road or mail a stack of cash to their office. Otherwise Visa/Mastercard will have your true address via the bank. Visa/Mastercard as you know have offices in the US :)

US companies = bend me over and do me from behind like a wh*re if they get a subpoena from a court.

The overall rule its always a good thing to overestimate and be over-paranoid.
