Advice needed on removing competitior from page

Hello all and thank you for your time!

Now I'm not sure if it's ok to post here, so admins please move if wrong!

So here is my issue I have a website client in a niche where they have the #1 organic spot.

The problem is the site in the 3rd spot is always talking trash about every company in the niche to make everyone else look bad.

So I wanted to ask if any of you have ever tried to build other sites to rank to push down competition further down the organic SERPs

Not necessarily like a revenge tactic, but just something to clear the air a little in the top 5 or 6 spots.

I'm posting out of frustration. My client doesn't want to try and catch them personally in a defamation issue, but just see if we build some micro sites to punch them down.

What you can do is try to outrank them so you're above them. That's step 1.

If the stuff they say is libelous or lies, you can sue them and get them out legally.

But if what they say is legal, or a review, or other fair use, then your only choice is to outrank them.

Thank you for the reply. My client already outranks them, but the competitor site is #3 spot and so many people get bids from the top 5 at times.

The issue is the competition site owner offers a service to let you know if the company your looking at is any good.

So I guess basically a review, but it's like they always try to send people to their own company and make everyone else look bad.

Here's an example:

So it's like a car dealership having a website that lets you ask who is the best car dealership in town, but of course they say it's them. The issue is they tell people that based on their findings they have compared 100 dealerships in town on a specific set of rules and the best dealership is them.

The problem is they won't release who they compared for the 100 dealerships and they won't say what the rules or methods they compared.

So as a competitor you can't access their findings to stand up for yourself.

It's seems spammy and so we thought if we could get even 2 sites in a non competitive niche to outrank them, that would give us some cushion from them getting traffic.

I know it sounds weird but when you work hard, and you have someone trying to make everyone look bad it sucks.

In this case the best strategy would be to write good quality content about how this particular review site is biased and how they should disclose their ties to some of their reviewed products. If you do it well, you may get this popular on Reddit and elsewhere and that'll hit the competitor such that he'll stop this unethical practice.

Why are you worrying about it? Keep the moral high ground and don't bite. MOST consumers are actually quite intelligent and would not listen to someone who considers it good business to bitch about their competitors, especially if your don't rise to the bait. If your client is Number 1 in the search then the reality is, your client gets 95% of all traffic anyway and your probably clicking onto your competitors website more often than potential customers. Just ignore them and don't bite. Beat them with excellent service and he will ultimately lose.

buy a few decent expired domains and slap on some content, rank the new sites above your competitor.

Go to fiverr.com and buy video 10 - 15 reviews from people with stories on how they got ripped off by your competitor. Throw those videos on the new sites and start trash talking about your competitor and continue to do so until you ruin their business.

If it is a very competitive term and hard to rank then just build out sites like:

Competitor-company-name-ripoff.com
Competitor-company-name-stolemymoney.com

etc.. and put the videos on there and start trash talking all the way!

Exactly. Put out something known as white paper on their finding. Your client shoul get hold of a good consultant who is in this business. Your job is to rank that white paper when they finish with it. A white paper is a detailed study of their claim and pick holes in it.
