I don't think it is going to hurt them too badly.
They are going to face a lawsuit(couple of million, pocket change), and they are going to get slapped with some fines, that's about it.
I don't think anyone is going to stop using the service because it was hacked. If anything, all of the exposure the news sites just gave them probably increased their traffic stream. Get inside someones head for a second, they just saw Adult Friend Finder associated with 400 million accounts - that just increased Joe Blow's chances of getting laid significantly, compared to a smaller site with 1-2 million users.

When it comes to adult related dating and content, I can't see any way that exposure of losing user data would increase membership.. people clear their history in fear of their significant other finding what they view, you think the idea that their friends/family/co-workers can find out what kind of kinky shit they are into would increase interest in a site?
My thoughts exactly. If the site is struggling, nothing like free publicity to give it a boost -- and what better way to get attention than hacking/fraud right after the US election which was dominated by this kind of chatter.
On the other hand ... maybe it's genuine ... maybe the Russians did it!

I mean, look at all the shit that was flying around about Billary Clinton over the past months. 50 million brain dead americans ran right out and supported them after it. On the other side, we had Donald ... and another 50 million did likewise.

You'd be surprised how many use their real email with a fake name. What was that other leak that embarrassed half the world and ended a billion marriages? Two years ago or so? Fake names and real emails was the catch.

This wasn't "moralist hackers", the database wasn't originally leaked publicly, it was for sale.

Databases of sites that have adult related stuff have been hacked alot lately, so their may be some connections.

I think one of the reasons being that Adult sites almost always contain a large amount of payment information.

Yes, that's pretty valuable info for hackers and for marketers too. From a marketer point of view, i'm not talking about the credit card details, but the fact that you can weed out all the useless members, who didn't spent anything and you can mail those only who actually spent money.

These adult site that keep getting hacked is hilarious. I imagine it was done as a challenge just finding vulnerabilities/exploits.
The analogy was showing how negative news, no matter how bad, does not necessarily negatively affect people.
I'm not from the US, so I don't give a damn about their politics.
PS .. I didn't realise I had made two posts along those same lines, that was an error. I was distracted when making the first post and had numerous BHW tabs open and thought the first post was gone.
