I have a couple sites that bounce every few hours from positions around 20 to all the way in the 200s. What could be the problem with these sites? I haven't seen bouncing like that before. First the site does not bounce and is almost ranked, then starts bouncing heavily

Google Dance.
Is the website newly ranked? Did you do any off-page seo recently? Those might be the reasons. Give it a time and it should settle down.
If not, you dance with it as well.

Yes, the site is newly ranked but I haven't seen bouncing of hundreds of positions before. I should continue to build links?

There are many reasons why website's bounce rate is increasing. Aside from Google dance, maybe your website is no longer attractive or takes great time before it loads. When a website is no longer useful or bore viewers, that's the time they leave the website. Try to make your landing pages visually appealing, loads fast, and mobile friendly.

Long time since I've heard the Goolge Dance term! Try cheking your back link profile and also look at every Off Page SEO you have implemented. It's time you settle the page to a particular ranking and then start over your optimization process again.

Kindly wait for few more days to see if the rankings settle down. It would be a waste of money to enhance your Link Building at this time as you may have both a win or loss situation.

Check them on a couple days or a week, not in a few hours. Also do some assessment on what you did before it was bounce. If you build the links and seo it in the correct way by all means continue and wait for some days to rank it.

Seems Google dance. When you build links it will happen. It will take some time to settle down. Wait for a while and start build links.

Do these sites have dynamic homepages? An example of this would be a blog where every new post gets posted on the homepage, pushing previous posts off page.

This can create a situation that could cause the site to fluctuate in the serps.

The sites have static homepages, and it's been a few weeks of bouncing. And yes the same page is ranking when it's position 20 and position 200.

Are you building links with keyword in anchor text? In other words are you trying to game Google? If yes then expect more volatility in ranking especially post Penguin 4.0 .. websites that gain their ranking organically do not witness this huge volatility

Volatility is now part of the game in 2016 (assuming Penguin will be re-evaluating links and detect spammy behaviors on daily basis)

hahahaha lol :D

May be due to Google dance otherwise such huge changes will not be possible, I think you should check your backlinks, there may be chances that it is due to it. Link your site to high authority sites. This will definitely help you in this.
