You should try this on a blog where people are actively commenting on.

It depends on my mood. What I have done is auto watermark the pictures with a text of my site's URL or a huge text of my site's URL all across the picture or sometimes completely replace the picture with an explanation that the owner is stealing my bandwidth and asking the users to visit my site to see the whole picture.

Keep in mind that Bandwidth is cheaper these days than it was years ago and unless they are heavily hotlinking all your pics and draining your wallet, you can use that as an opportunity to promote your site.

I've gone from replacing the image with goatse through to a mix of "this image stolen from ..." and cookie stuffing

Though you can't change the URL at all, so getting a cookie stuffed into a link that is an image/jpeg or something requires a bit of hackery. Or maybe that's just the fact that I don't really have a deep knowledge of CS.
