Sorry to rain on the parade, but what happened to the days of:

1. Type google.com into your address/url bar
2. When you see the search bar appear you;
3. Type "What is a backlink?" or "Define backlink"
4. Read the number 1 result which is most likely wikipedia or another high class seo site/blog

When I got started in 2006 I started off on the same above 4 steps and found a free ebook called "SEO Made Easy by Brad Callen". It's laden with plugs for SEO and Keyword Elite but he outlines manual procedures and yup - I did all he taught by hand. Within 2 months I had my first site owning #1 in Google, never understood the true power of it but I was there. I ain't saying Brad Callen is the ultimate SEO guru (far from it), but that's how I got started and all you people who don't understand:

1. What are "Backlinks"
2. What is "Indexing"
3. Google Dance, "Why did my new site disappear?"
4. SEO in general, "How do I decide on a main keyword?"

Should really think about self-education and using the famous "search" feature - you don't even have to register at Google to use it. It will carry you far beyond anyone of us in here can. It's like teaching yourself to fish without having to beg on the corner for scraps and fish bones.

Take this not as an insult, but please people...this is BHW...if you can't understand ground level SEO, go to the Warrior Forum where there are a lot of sympathetic and dreaming hearts. You posted this in the "Black Hat SEO" forum...learn learn learn, then come back here and post on the foundation you built.

This reminds me of the first time when I heard that term.. I think it was 2000 or 2001 and Google was pretty new at that time ...


A backlink, as others have already mentioned, is a link to your site. It could be from blogs, other websites, social sites, videos sites, directories, classified ad sites and so on. So when you submit your site to any directory, bookmark it in a Bookmarking site, comment on a blog or video with a link to your site, you are creating a link that points to your site. Google gives more importance to sites that have more backlinks pointing to them. These sites have greater chance to appear in the first few pages of results than the sites that have no links pointing to them.


Think of a backlink as a vote for your site. The more votes you site has, the more popular it is and can be easily found.

Ofcourse it is not only the number but also the quality of the links. A link from a site like youtube will carry more weight than say a link from an unknown site.

For example you have xxx.com and I have yyy.com
If I put a link to your website xxx.com in my website yyy.com that is called a backlink.

When a site puts your link on their page and google see's it ( which they will ). The more popular the site that has your link, the better it is for your site in googles eyes.
